crossstitch-wisdomMy mother has a cross stitch in her house that reads “Contentment is not the fulfillment of what you want but the realization of how much you already have.” Those words are SO true, yet hard to live by.  I’m not sure if you are like me, but after reading this my brain goes directly to “I have so much, I am so fortunate, I should give back more, I should do more with the kids to give back, and on and on...” Then, I walk away from the picture and it’s gone: all those good intentions, gone.

Why? Life is so fast and too busy: you blink and your kids are older; another year goes by.

It is so hard to find the time.  In looking at this more closely, I think the goals in my head were always too large.  When I envisioned getting involved it usually entailed a goal that was unattainable for a household with three kids and two working parents.  I believe there are so many people out there like me, who would do more if it were easy to do so.  Those who truly want their children to understand how it feels to lend a helping hand, to know that good comes from within you and to add value to their lives.

I Support Community gives a way to share charities’ and other non-profits’ stories with your children, to find ways to give back that can easily fit your busy schedule.  In five minutes or less you can experience that amazing feeling that comes from helping someone else, and share it with your kids.  I don’t know if I will ever live each day according to that cross stitch; I’ll start with five minutes every day and work up from there.
